KoCreate

KoCreate Creative group: Run by Neurodivergent people for Neurodivergent people in Portsmouth and nationally virtually on Zoom.

Picture
Ko-create is a weekly creative space run by Flow Observatorium in conjunction with Portsmouth Community Autism Forum and Room One.

The group is a very friendly, open and accepting space welcoming of all neurodivergent people, inclusive of selfDX, all sexuality/gender and level, type and style of creativity.

People can join in with Ko-create projects or bring their own work to sit and make, skill share and chat. Everyone is free to come and engage, join in however they wish at their own pace.
We know Autistic People especially often face acute isolation, health inequality and self confidence issues and that joining in with or self directed creative activity boosts wellbeing, benefiting our sense of belonging. Belonging we feel is vital for maintaining good Autistic mental health and proving that, given the right opportunities, Autistic people can be innately enquiring, supportive and creative.

We understand that coming along for the first time may feel daunting so support persons are welcome to attend and within our welcoming peer-supportive and relaxed working space you can create by drawing, pattern making, crafts, origami, colouring (music soon), Lego including printing and if people choose to they can take part in external creative projects, some of which are also commissioned and participants paid.

Presently we meet at Room One,
Spithead Resource Centre, Montgomerie Rd, Southsea, Portsmouth, Southsea PO5 1EB
on a Wednesday from 12 to 2:30pm and in the evening on Zoom 6:30 to 7:45pm.

Room One.
Room One is a new space managed by autistic people, for autistic people in Portsmouth. The space is a one-stop shop for autistic and neurodivergent adults aged over 18 in the PO1 – PO6 area, their family and friends, and the professionals supporting them.

The Room One team can help by providing information, advice and support on topics including referrals, socialising, living independently, and peer support. They can also signpost to other local services if needed. No diagnosis is needed to use Room One’s services. People are welcome to attend any of the sessions held at Room One to talk to the team and ask any questions they may have, or to try resources including sensory items. It is also a space for professionals to connect and hold discussions.

The team host regular activities, including online and in-person peer support as well as one-to-one and drop-in sessions. The Room One team includes facilitators who are both neurodivergent and very excited to be running a space for autistic adults, by autistic adults. They feel that lived experience is key in understanding and functioning and together, want to ensure autistic adults in the local community feel valued and listened to.
About Room One
Flow Observatorium
Is a Portsmouth based ‘equality and diversity’ charity, set up with funding from Arts Council England in 2017, aiming to become a national hub for, and led by, Neurodivergent people. FlOb supports Neurodivergent people to make work, collaborate, and engage within society, the arts and cultural sector and support the co- creation of attitudinal and physical ‘safe spaces’ for Neurodivergent people. We especially challenge traditional attitudes towards autistic people, championing and encouraging autistic-led understanding, narratives, agency and autistic informed access on autistic terms.
About Flow Ob
KoCreate Collective Flow Observatorium, together with Portsmouth Autism Community Forum (PACF), Room One, set up KoCreate; running free creative sessions for Neurodivergent Creatives, both online nationally and face-to-face in Portsmouth facilitated by Autistic Artist Jon Adams.

The collective meet every week and as well as self directed projects have collaborated with organisations such as Royal Collage of Arts, Portsmouth Creates and actively advocate for understanding of Neurodivergent Creatives holistically.
About Jon Adams
Jon Adams is both a contemporary Artist, advocate and researcher, working in a variety of media including sound, drawing, word and performance, often referencing his autism, synaesthesia and dyslexia, all interwoven with history, science, time and his past experiences. The result is a unique visual perspective of systemising and recording history, time and place.
He studied geology at Kings College London becoming a geological book illustrator, later branching out into history and conceptual artwork. His national profile includes creating work across a wide range of institutions, universities, organisations and has shown in galleries such as Royal Academy, Tate Modern and Turner Contemporary.

He's been commissioned for many projects including Parliament in the making 2015, London 2012 and for the stage. He undertakes Neurodiversity training, currently researches ‘Autism and trauma’ and advocates for the rights and agency of Neurodivergent people to fully access the arts, funding, health care and coproduce relevant research.

The KoCreate Project was initially funded by a ‘Thriving Communities’ grant through The ‘You Trust’ and continued by ‘Flow Observatorium’ Arts Council England funding.
